Dialling up a holiday

How easy is it to switch off on holiday? Admittedly that is a question which has no single answer. So whilst some are able to fully enjoy their holiday in the knowledge that they are coming back to a clean desk; others may find themselves putting in extra hours before they depart with work then piling up until they return.

At least those individuals are able to go away. Spare a thought for the UK’s small business owners. According to a 2017 report, more than half take five or less days off each year with a fifth not taking a single day in the preceding year. This despite numerous studies which highlight the positive impact of taking a break on mental and physical well-being.

It’s easy to see why those running small businesses may feel unable to take a break. Setting aside sole traders whose business effectively closes down when they go away, other leaders of small businesses may feel that their people are not ready to take the strain when the boss is away. And whilst it is easy to be glib and suggest that perhaps delegation and empowerment should move up the priority list, it has to be acknowledged that, particularly in a fast-growing business, the guiding hand may need to be more present than in an established enterprise.

So what is the solution? How can business leaders, and others, take time off without losing touch? Luckily we now live in an interconnected era, a time in which broadband and phone calls can reach around the globe. Nowadays there is no need to switch the phone to answerphone and hope that by the time you return from your break your customers won’t have looked elsewhere.

Call forwarding means that calls can be seamlessly forwarded to any nominated landline or mobile number, enabling you to stay in touch without being physically present. And with caller notification added in, it is easy to screen calls, accepting those which are important to your business and switching the rest to answerphone or a virtual assistant service.

In fact, with call forwarding in play you may not even need to let your customers know that you are away. For example with a Calling Spain package, calls can be seamlessly diverted to a Spanish landline or mobile; enabling you to stay in touch without sacrificing some much needed away time.

Of course, you don’t have to go on holiday to take advantage of call forwarding and preannouncement. Whether you find yourself regularly travelling across the UK for business, or perhaps mixing office days with working from home days, the ability to divert calls as required means you can stay working in the business while you are out of the office.

Taking a break from the daily routine is important. It can help you to refresh and renew and by taking a step back from the day-to-day, it can also help you to refocus on the long-term success of your business. But taking a break doesn’t necessarily mean being out of contact with call forwarding giving you the best of both worlds; selectively staying in touch whilst enjoying some well earned holiday time.
