Time for charity

The announcement by Prince Harry and Meghan Markle that in lieu of wedding presents they had selected seven charities to benefit from donations provides a welcome boost to the charity sector. Not only does their request directly benefit the chosen charities, the publicity also helps to promote the idea of celebrating an occasion by benefiting others.

Does the UK charity sector need a boost? Well, no matter how generous people are, there is always more that can be done in order to help charities across the spectrum to deliver good levels of support to those in need. And it appears that more of us could do more. In its 2017 World Giving Index the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) asked people if in the last month they had helped a stranger, donated money or volunteered time. The UK came eleventh on the index, with just 50% of those questioned admitting to one or more of those activities.

One of the challenges which people may face when giving to charity is to decide just which charity to support. People want to know that any donations which they make are actually going to reach those in need. For example, one of our colleagues was commenting on the other day that one charity shop local to them extracts the benefit from every donation, even looking to bulk recycle old materials for rags, whilst another sends unsold goods to landfill.

Another concern which people have is whether the charity is completely genuine in its aims and constitution. This is also a concern for the Charity Commission which has released advice on how to give safely to charity. This advice includes:

  • checking the charity’s name and registration number on the Charity Commission register
  • ensure that street collectors are properly licensed to do so
  • asking a few simple questions about the work of the charity and how donations are to be used
  • never feel under pressure to make an immediate donation

Whether through direct funding, providing donated goods for sale, or simply giving time there are many ways in which we can all support the charity sector. Selecting an 0300 charity telephone number may seem like a small step, but if it helps visibility of the charity and encourages even one more person to offer a donation or ask for help then it is certainly worthwhile.
