OFCOM changes to 0870 calls

What are the options available to existing 0870 users?

NOTE: the charges or rentals for the 0870 number is unclear as at this time BT/OFCOM have not published any wholesale charges for the period after Jan 2008.

The following table outlines the basic tariffs for the UK Number ranges.

  Please Note: OFCOM have delayed the changes due to issues with their implementation and the impact on some services, at present no timescale has been announced although the expectation is that a further announcement will be made in Spring 2008.
090x Premium Rate Number from 10ppm to 150ppm Revenue paid monthly in arrears.
0871 Up to 10p per minute at all times (inc vat) 3ppm minium revenue.
0844 Up to 5p per minute at all times (inc vat) from 1p to 1.25ppm revenue
0845 Up to 4p per minute From 0p to 2ppm cost
0800 Free to the caller Up to 4ppm cost
03 Same as UK Regional number TBA
01/02 Available with service Only available with Callagenix Advanced services.

In deciding how to proceed, you should consider the following.

1. Financial implications for your company

  • Do you wish to retain revenue share at levels similar to those of today on 0870?
  • Are you prepared to accept a drop in revenue share and change to 0844 in an effort to maintain customer satisfaction?
  • Will you accept zero revenue share (and pay for call delivery) in order to provide your customers with the same service?
  • What is the cost of re-printing collateral if you migrate from 0870
2. How this may change customer communication
  • Can you change the number your customer dials to contact you without a major impact on customer satisfaction?
  • Do you want to offer your customers a reduced rate for calling your business (0845/0844)?
  • Do you want to offer your customer the ability to call your business for no charge (0800)
What you want Actions
1. Increase/Maintain Revenue share  Change your number to 0871.
2. Accept a reduction in revenue share  Change to 0844.
3. Do nothing and keep your 0870 Pay a charge or rental for 0870, the cost will not be confirmed until the wholsale rates are published, waiting for OFCOM & BTWholesale
4. Complete change Change to 0800, 0845, 03xx
