OFCOM changes to 0870 calls
Summary
OFCOM have announced that the rebate currently paid against 0870 numbers will shortly come to an end.
Please Note: OFCOM have delayed the changes due to issues with their implementation and the impact on some services. At present no timescale has been announced although the expectation is that a further announcement will be made in Spring 2008.
0870 numbers cost the caller about 8ppm daytime
OFCOM have decided to remove all revenues on 0870 numbers by end of January 2008 (see note above). The changes made by Ofcom have both financial and customer service implications for any business currently using 0870 numbers.
OFCOM’s approach is broadly in line with the proposals it published for public consultation in September 2005. Many of the 1,300 responses to this consultation highlighted the case for changes to 0870 and increased consumer protection.
At Callagenix we agree with OFCOM that there should be greater transparency for consumers calling NTS (08XX numbers). However, in our opinion the changes made by Ofcom will at best result in greater confusion for the caller, whilst significantly impacting hundreds of thousands of small companies. If you have any points you wish to raise with OFCOM concerning how these changes will impact your business, Ofcom can be contacted at nts@ofcom.co.uk or call 020 7981 3000.
