How does a premium rate support line package work?
Many businesses, particularly in the IT industry, recoup some of the costs of providing technical assistance by running a premium rate support lines. It is an easy and reliable way of ensuring that you are receiving payment for the time you are spending assisting your customers on the telephone. Or it can be used to steer clients to buying a support contract.
When your customers call the Premium rate support line they will be told that they are being charged for the call, and then their call is diverted either to a hunt group or to the least busy telephone line in your office.
As a requirement of the Premium rate code, calls are pre-announced so that your staff know the call is premium rate one. Options can also be set up to allow staff to reject the call in which case the call will route to the next available member of staff.
If all staff are busy, the caller will be informed and asked to call back later.
If your service is not 24 x 7 service, an “out of office hours”, or “lines closed” recorded message can be played informing callers of your opening times.
The service enables you to offer a professional support service to your callers, increasing customer confidence and improving call-handling efficiency.
Should you not wish to use a premium rate phone number to earn revenues, you may wish to consider using a Callagenix PIN entry service. This enables you to steer customers towards taking out support contracts for a specified time period, only allowing contact with your support teams only if they have a unique PIN number.

How do I set a Premium Rate number service up?
All 09 premium rate numbers are regulated by the Premium Rate Regulator, PhonepayPlus. As a result, you will need to comply fully with the PhonepayPlus code of practice including registering as a service provider and providing Callagenix with suitable contact and ID documentation.

As a very general rule if your service is pre-recorded and not a live one (two way conversations) and does not target minors (under 18) you do not need prior permission, just compliance with the code. Most live services will require a live certificate from PhonepayPlus with some exceptions including Premium rate support lines.
